About the Series:

The Foundations of Interpreting Processes is an eight-part series during which new and seasoned participants alike can explore their own interpreting process. In parts I and II, participants are introduced to the Integrated Model of Interpreting and explore the application of this pedagogical model using texts in both ASL and English. Participants who have taken the various parts of this 8-part series return offering after offering to take them again. The learning environment is centered around the individual learner, and returning participants bring with them their new perspectives and questions. The presenter, Betty M. Colonomos, is a native ASL/English bilingual who has been educating interpreters for 40 years. She has created a learning series that is unique and fun, and one where learners can feel comfortable exploring their own work. Please, join us!

About the Seminars:

This seminar will focus on components of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI) in a low stress, highly interactive environment. Participants will learn how to convey equivalent messages by working through graduated texts and activities. By working on skills in small-group formats (pairs or triads), participants will develop tools for understanding and improving their own internal processes. Participants will also learn non-evaluative and specific language skills to facilitate discussion of the interpreting task with each other. Participants will be exposed to strategies for continuing their own improvement. Practice materials will be interpreted from spoken English into ASL. All interpreting is done in consecutive mode. This seminar is suitable for working interpreters, certified interpreters, and interpreting students, with adequate receptive ASL skills. Comfortable clothing is encouraged.

About the Presenter:

Betty M. Colonomos, currently serving as Director of the Bilingual Mediation Center, is a fluent ASL/English bilingual. Her academic training has been in Deaf Education/Speech Pathology (undergraduate), Counseling (graduate) and Linguistics (doctoral).  Betty was awarded the Masters Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MCSC) from RID in 1980.  She was the second recipient of the Mary Stotler Award for excellence in Interpreter Education from CIT.  Betty has chaired many national committees on standards and evaluation of interpreters. Ms. Colonomos is well known as an educator of interpreters and language consultant.  She has developed the most widely used model (Integrated Model of Interpreting  - IMI) for teaching processes used in interpreting.  Her current energies are focused on creating Communities of Reflective Practitioners.
