Summer is Almost Over :: Womens Health Fair 9/11/2010 :: Meeting Schedule 2010-2011 :: Deaf Awareness Week

I can hardly believe that summer is nearly over! The Region I conference has come and gone, with great success! At least 40 interpreters currently or recently residing in Rochester were in attendance, including most members of the GVRRID board.

Rochester Women's Health Fair - September 11, 2010 - 9am — 1pm

Please find attached a document describing the upcoming Women's Health Fair, on 9/11/2010. This is a free event for all (so you can come and get a Health Screening even if you don't volunteer) and all of the providers are volunteering their time to provide their services and screenings. The health fair organizers would like to ensure that their event is accessible to Deaf women and as such are seeking interpreters to commit 1-4 hours for the event, which will be held at the Rochester Public Market. Last year they had over 300 attendees, about 5% of which were Deaf. It is not known how many Deaf women will decide to attend this year, but the Health Fair organizers would like to be ready to ensure access. As a benefit to you, you will receive a T shirt and you also will be able to get a health screening for yourself, if you are a woman, should you choose to do so!

This would be a great opportunity for mentor/mentee teams, as well as individuals who want to "give back." If you are interested in participating by volunteering your time, please send me an email - president@gvrrid.org. Also, if you would, please send this request out to other friends and colleagues who may be interested in supporting such an event. This is a photo of a model of how the event will be organized and all of the possible screenings women will be able to access.

I don't have a lot of info at the moment, but another "giving back" opportunity will be Deaf Awareness Week 2010 - September 19th through 26th. We will definately need interpreters for the kickoff, Artist's Row, September 19th at the Public Market. Again, the is a great mentee/mentor opportunity. It's also a day where there will be many different needs for a variety of interpreters. Beth Metlay, Linda Panko and I are working on arranging for interpretation. We're still putting together the full schedule but if you're interested in lending your hands, please let me know!

Join us at the Public Market on September 19, 2010 for Artist Row from 10:00am to 4:00pm with our kick-off ceremony at 2:00pm! Deaf Awareness week is DEAFfinitely Rochester at its best!

Also on the DAW website is the form to submit for presenting during the week...perhaps there's something you'd like to share with Deaf or Hearing consumers of interpreting services?

Cheers all! Enjoy the last breath of Summer!!
